Outdoor
recreation in Mississippi just received a boost with the opening
of The Longleaf Trace, a railroad-turned- recreational
trail in South Mississippi. The shady asphalt trail winds
its way along 41 miles of an abandoned section of Illinois
Central Railroad from Hattiesburg to Prentiss. Towns
along the way include Sumrall, Bassfield and Carson.

The
Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby (Hattiesburg). This
newly renovated cultural addition preserves memorabilia of
our American heritage at the largest state-owned and operated
National Guard field training site in the United States, 12
miles south of Hattiesburg on Highway 49. The
museum houses an extensive collection of memorabilia from
the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War,
the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. Over 6,100 items
are displayed from all branches of the military. The museum
also features a library. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to
4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday

The Walnut Street Pharmacy and Ice Cream Parlor (Hattiesburg)

is a unique new restaurant nestled in the heart of historic
downtown Hattiesburg. Housed in a 1920's World War II hotel,

the Saenger Theater. The family owned and operated restaurant

menu, including breads, pasta, and soup are made from scratch
daily. From the simple, yet inventive menu to the rotating
art show on the walls, 206 is truly a unique experience you
