The film festival will showcase films made by and/or about people of African descent. Film entries should depict positive realistic images of people of African descent and can be of any genre including drama, comedy, horror, adventure, animation, romance, and science fiction. They may also be features and shorts, both narrative and documentary. Submission DEADLINE: JAN 31, 2014

LOOK WHO RETURNS TO FILM MISSISSIPPI IN NOVEMBER
EXCLUSIVE: Tate Taylor has set Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer to star with Chadwick Boseman in Get On Up, the James Brown biopic that Imagine’s Brian Grazer is producing with Jagged Films’ Mick Jagger. Davis will play Susie Brown, who was only 16 when she gave birth to the future R&B legend, and abandoned him to live with relatives. Spencer will play the child’s Aunt Honey, a formative figure in his upbringing. This is a re-team with Taylor from The Help, for which Davis was nominated for Best Actress Oscar and Spencer winning for Best Supporting Actress. Universal will start production November in Mississippi. The script is by Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth and Steven Baigelman, and Victoria Pearman and Erica Huggins are also producing. Davis is repped by CAA and Principal Entertainment, Spencer by WME.

We Feel Good!! -- James Brown Biopic to be filmed in Mississippi
Ward Emling of The Mississippi Film Office speaks of the passion Mississippi has always had for filmmaking at the MS Coliseum during the announcement this morning, with Governor Phil Bryant, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves and Speaker of the House Phillip Gunn, that Tate Taylor, director of The Help will shoot his new project entirely in Mississippi. The new project is a biopic about the life and career of James Brown and is scheduled to begin shooting this fall.
