This is a beginner’s course for anyone with an interest in learning more about the sound department for a film/video production. A sound mixer is an audio engineer who works with a boom operator (crew member who operates the ) to record the production sound on the set at the time of filming. This class will cover the responsibilities of the sound mixer, types of microphones and equipment, sound recording in various environments, basic post-production sound and the duties of the boom operator and other support staff. Equipment will be provided as necessary. Prior audio knowledge is helpful for this course, but not required. This class will be taught by a professional sound mixer in a classroom setting with supervised field trips for sound gathering. This course will be taught at the Hinds Community College Rankin branch in Pearl, Mississippi.
Instructor: Sam Watson is a location sound mixer, post-production guru, and composer. His work includes location sound work and/or post for VH1, The Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network with Rachel Ray, the World Poker Tour, the Army, NASA, and the Navy among many others; documentaries including Martin Scorsese’s PBS “The Blues” series; and features including The Help, Ballast, Five Fingers, Waiting, and most recently Big Significant Things.

The course is designed to introduce participants to the rigors of scripting film or television programs. Participants will follow industry practices under the guidance of an experienced Hollywood professional. They will learn to “pitch” program ideas, develop those ideas into detailed story outlines and then turn those outlines into screenplays in proper industry format.

It's About You Film Festival CALL FOR ENTRIES:
The film festival will showcase films made by and/or about people of African descent. Film entries should depict positive realistic images of people of African descent and can be of any genre including drama, comedy, horror, adventure, animation, romance, and science fiction. They may also be features and shorts, both narrative and documentary. Submission DEADLINE: JAN 31, 2014
