Electric(ian) for the Film Industry
August 23 – September 15, 2011;
Tues. & Thurs., 6-9pm

This is a beginner’s course for non-film industry electricians, experienced film industry grips, or anyone with an interest in learning more about the electrical department for a film/video production. The course will familiarize students with electrical and lighting equipment used on location and in a studio; the electrician’s role in setting up lights with an emphasis on safely providing electricity to the necessary equipment; the responsibilities of each position within the department; terminology used within the department and on a film set. Upon completion, students should be able to execute basic electrical directions given by a gaffer. This course will be taught at the Hinds Rankin branch with scheduled field trips to studio settings.

September 27 – November 1, 2011;

This is a beginner’s course for anyone with an interest in learning more about the grip department for a film/video production specifically those with experience as a stagehand. The typical duties of a grip involve camera movement, lighting refinement, and mechanical rigging. The course will familiarize students with grip and lighting equipment used on location and in a studio; the grip’s role in set up, adjustment and maintenance of equipment on the set with an emphasis on safety; the responsibilities of each position within the department and the relationship with the electrical and camera departments; terminology used within the department and on a film set. Upon completion, students should be able to execute basic grip directions given by a key grip. This course will be taught at the Hinds Rankin branch with scheduled field trips to studio settings.

Location scouting for the Film Industry
September 9-10, 2011;
Friday 6-9pm, Saturday 9-4pm

This is a beginner’s course for anyone with an interest in learning more about the locations department for a film/video production, specifically those with an interest in photography and architecture with a good sense of direction and strong organizational skills. A location scout searches for filming locations and works under the Location Manager. In some cases, the scout may also serve as the location manager. This class will include a basic overview of architectural styles, how to analyze a script for locations, basic composition for location photography, how to organize and present locations to producers/directors/production designers, and will introduce general terminology used within the department and the film industry All participants must bring a digital still camera. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes for outdoor photography. This course will be taught at the Hinds Rankin branch.

Wardrobe assistant for the Film Industry
September 23-24, 2011;
Friday 6-9pm, Saturday 9-4pm

This is a beginner’s course for anyone with an interest in learning more about working within the wardrobe department on a film/video production, specifically those with an interest in fashion, experience in theatrical costuming, or general design interest. The Wardrobe Assistant works under a Costume Designer and his/her team handling various wardrobe related activities. They work both on set and in the warehouse. The wardrobe department is responsible for all costumes on all actors and all background talent. This course will include a style overview, practical knowledge (i.e., tying ties), a basic sewing/costume repair tutorial and cleaning section, and general tricks of the trade.

Production assistant and Craft Services for the Film Industry
October 7-8, 2011;

This is a beginner’s course for anyone with an interest in learning more about working on a film/video production. A Production Assistant is an entry-level position on most sets. Production assistants can be hired for any department: production, wardrobe, art, camera, locations, etc. The Craft Service (or Services) position handles all non-meal food for crew consumption. This person is in charge of purchasing, preparing, maintaining, and clean-up each production day. This course will consist of familiarization with the terminology, equipment, forms, and safety measures used in this position. This course will be taught at the Hinds Rankin branch.

Art department assistant for the Film Industry
October 21-22, 2011;
Friday 6-9pm, Saturday 9-4pm

This is a beginner’s course for anyone with an interest in learning more about working within the art department on a film/video production, specifically those with an interest in the visual arts and interior design. The Art Department Assistant works under a Production Designer and his/her team handling various department related activities from props to set dressing. They work both on set and in the warehouse. The art department is responsible for arranging the overall "look" of the film (i.e. modern/high-tech, rustic, futuristic, etc.) as desired by the director. This course will include a style overview, practical knowledge, and general tricks of the trade. This course will be taught at the Hinds Rankin branch with scheduled field trips to studio settings if necessary.

This is a beginner’s course for anyone with an interest in learning more about working on a film/video production in the area of casting. The Extras Casting Coordinator handles the casting of and communication with all non-speaking (background) actors. This course will consist of familiarization with the terminology, equipment, and forms and general practices used in this position. This course will be taught at the Hinds Rankin branch.
