The Pines Region
The Pines Region is located in east-central Mississippi, along the Alabama border and consists of rolling countryside covered with hardwoods. The largest city in the region, Meridian, has several nice golf courses. The region does have a powerful golf pedigree as well, with the highest rated courses in the state: Old Waverly Golf Club and Dancing Rabbit Golf Club.Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point combines the feel and look of the Scottish Highlands in a graceful Old South setting. The course is ranked the best in the state by Golf Digest. Designed by former U.S. Open champion Jerry Pate and Bob Cupp, Old Waverly Golf Club proudly hosted the 1999 U.S. Women’s Open. Built on gently rolling terrain, the course features five beautiful lakes that come into play, exceptionally large Bentgrass greens and wide fairways lined with majestic oaks. It plays right at 7,000 yards from the tips and is highlighted by the signature 18th hole, a 445-yard par-4 dogleg left with water from Lake Waverly guarding the entire left side. On-site cottages, upscale clubhouse dining and a laid-back pub come together to create this special place.
Expect a memorable experience at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club, located at Pearl River Resort in Choctaw. The two courses, the Azaleas and the Oaks, were built on the ancestral lands of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. These courses have been accorded numerous accolades by GOLF® Magazine, Golfweek and Golf Digest over the years. Each of the 36 holes at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club bears the distinctive touch of golf course architects Tom Fazio and Jerry Pate.
The resort itself boasts two hotels, exciting casino gaming and a number of dining establishments. Also in the region is the not-to-be-missed Mississippi State University Golf Course in Starkville. It’s one of the top public courses in the state and is appreciated for its gently rolling hills and tree-lined fairways, plus an assortment of strategically-placed bunkers and water on nine of the 18 holes.The Pines Region boasts some of the most exciting and challenging golf courses in Mississippi.
