Natchez Trace Parkway Itinerary
Day 1
The scenic Natchez Trace Parkway is renowned for its unspoiled,
natural beauty. Stretching diagonally across the state from
Natchez to Nashville, Tennessee (480 miles), the Trace follows
an enchanted route through lush forests into the heart of
Mississippi's past. First used by Native Americans thousands
of years ago and later as a major trade route during frontier
days, the Trace is lined with markers that point out important
sites that detail the fascinating history of this route. An
appropriate way to begin your historic journey is with a tour
of the magnificent antebellum homes of Natchez. Spend the
day touring these opulent mansions, taking a carriage ride
through historic downtown and shopping for period antiques.
Don't miss Natchez Under-the-Hill, where the saloons and scandals
of yesteryear have been replaced by colorful shops, quaint
restaurants and a gaming casino, all with a spectacular view
of the Mississippi River. This evening enjoy a wonderful reception
in an antebellum home before dining at one of the local restaurants.
Day 2
Travel north on this scenic parkway and discover portions
of the original Natchez Trace, stamped out by buffaloes and
used as trails by Native Americans. Rocky Springs is a beautiful
photo opportunity. You may want to venture off the route for
a glimpse of small-town life in Fayette, Lorman or Port Gibson.
Re-enter the parkway and enjoy a leisurely drive to Jackson.
The state's capital boasts a number of unique attractions
including the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry/National
Agricultural Aviation Museum, where living-history displays
depict farm life in the early 1900s; the Old Capitol Historical
Museum, which traces Mississippi's colorful history from ancient
times to the present day and the Mississippi Governor's Mansion,
the second-oldest governor's mansion still used as the governor's
residence.
Day 3
Your scenic drive north continues to the Mississippi Crafts
Center, where you can purchase original works by Mississippi
craftsmen. The Trace winds around the beautiful Ross Barnett
Reservoir and Cypress Swamp, then on to the Kosciusko Visitors
Center. Discover the history of this Mississippi town named
after a Polish general. Enjoy lunch here or continue the scenic
drive north to French Camp, one of the first communities founded
along the Trace. Here you'll find period artifacts housed
in authentic log cabins, a restored antebellum home, a bed
and breakfast inn, and an operating sorghum mill. More beautiful
sites await you. Continue the journey to Tupelo and the Parkway's
headquarters and visitors center. A museum here chronicles
the centuries-old history of the Natchez Trace. While in Tupelo,
visit the Oren Dunn City Museum and the birthplace of Elvis
Presley, the "King of Rock and Roll." Overnight
in Tupelo before continuing your journey along the Natchez
Trace Parkway.
