Meridian

As one of the state's largest cities, Meridian, Mississippi got its start as a railroad town around 1854, which made it vulnerable to General William T. Sherman's scorched earth policy during the Civil War. After the war, the town began to prosper and later became famous as home to the "Father of Country Music", Jimmie Rodgers. Today, a museum tells of his life as "The Singing Brakeman" and features memorabilia, his guitar and other items of interest. In Highland Park is one of only three turn-of-the-century menagerie antique two-row Dentzel carousels known to exist in the U. S. For fifty cents, you can take a spin and marvel at the museum quality artwork adorning the crown and hand-carved animals.
