Pearl River (Upper and Lower) is an excellent example of a large Gulf Coastal Plain river with extensive swamplands. The upper reaches are very scenic as the river twists and turn and in many places flows past excellent recreational sandbars and huge cypress trees. The ecosystems along this river support numerous endangered, threatened and rare wildlife species. Put in/take out locations: NANIH WAIYA WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Marked canoe trail at the headwaters of Pearl River beginning near the Indian mound at Nanih Waiya Wildlife Management Area, scenic tour, large cypress trees COAL BLUFF WATERPARK TO RATLIFF FERRY; put in: Coal Bluff Water Park; take out: Ratliff Ferry; 8-mile section; explore surrounding backwaters RATLIFF FERRY; put in/take out: Ratliff Ferry Boat Ramp; explore swamps, sloughs, oxbows; leisurely paddle up of down stream on Pearl River RATLIFF FERRY TO GOSHEN SPRINGS; put in: Ratliff Ferry; take out: Goshen Springs (Tommy's Trading Post on Highway 43); 10-mile section of Pearl River; flows into upper end of reservoir ROSS BARNETT SPILLWAY TO LEFLEURS BLUFF STATE PARK; put in: boat ramp on southwest side of spillway; take out: boat ramp in LeFluer's Bluff State Park near Campground; 11 miles on Pearl River
