The characteristically alkaline soils of this area support a plant community different from the surrounding woodlands. This 150-acre prairie, located within Bienville National Forest, is managed strictly to ensure the protection and perpetuation of this rare vegetative type. Mid-June through early July are the best times to visit this area to see unusual native flowering species. At these times, butterflies are common. Many neotropical birds, such as the prairie warbler, indigo bunting, blue grosbeak, yellow-breasted chats, and common yellowthroat are usually present during spring and summer.
