This historic road, sunken from traffic since the 1820s, was widely used during the Civil War. Today it resembles the old sunken Natchez Trace. Bell Road was once an Indian trail. This sunken roadway later served ox-drawn carts. The road, still in use, is so narrow only one vehicle can pass through at a time. At one time a bell was located at both ends to warn that someone was entering, and so it became known as Bell Road.
