Eudora Welty House

The Eudora Welty House is literary museum located in the historic Belhaven neighborhood. Eudora Welty was a Pulitzer Prize winning author of international acclaim and her home in Jackson is where she always returned to create her novels and short stories. The garden at the house is beautifully reconstructed to the 1925-1945 period.

The Eudora Welty House on Pinehurst is the second home the Welty family occupied in Jackson.  The Tudor-style home was built by her father and was here home until her death  in 2001.  The house and gardens were lovingly preserved by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and looks just as it was when she died.  Stacks of books cover almost every surface and replicas of her writings sit on the dining room table.  Her favorite typewriter still sits in front of the window in her room upstairs.  The set of Dickens books her mother famously threw out of a window of a burning apartment are upstairs in the spare bedroom. 

After her death, family members found a box full of awards in a closet – including her famed Pulitzer Prize.  The award she displayed with the most pride is still sitting on a shelf in her spare room: a porcelain Raven for the distinction of being the top mystery book reader of the year.  The breakfast room and "hospitality area" where Welty mixed cocktails every Thursday night for her best Jackson pals, historian Patti Carr Black and New Stage Theater owner Jane Petty Reid, still has liquor bottles on the shelf waiting to be poured.
