Clegg's Cafe

Clegg's Café is on the corner of Highways 82 and 49 which makes it hard to miss.  Clegg's opened in 1945, when Jessie Pernell started the "White Front Café" on Church Street.  The café is affectionately known as “Chicken and Rice” by the locals because of its decadent chicken and rice plates.  The restaurant is now owned by Jessie’s great-granddaughter Felicia Ross and her husband, Gerald.  Felicia learned to cook by watching both her great-grandmother and her grandmother, Aurrie Clegg.  She named today's version of the restaurant after her grandfather John Clegg because, in true Mississippi fashion, "everybody knew him."  The handwritten menu is on the wall behind the cash register and it reflects a good range of choices for hungry stomachs including the traditional chicken and rice plate with the option of thighs, legs or wings.  If you have a taste for something a little different try the Clegg Burger that comes topped with chili and slaw or if that’s too risky, a simple fried fish and shrimp plate will hit the spot.
