Considered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to be one of the finest examples of a turn of the twentieth century school left in the state. Contains a theater, a dance studio, facilities for art exhibits and a meeting room available for civic groups, as well as two museums - the Sam Olden Yazoo Historical Society Museum and the William Duke Carter Collection of Antique Tools.
At the entrance to the downtown riverfront, artist Robert Dafford’s 32 life-like pictorial murals depict periods of history in Vicksburg. Also featured is an abstract mural by Vicksburg artist Martha Ferris which was the first mural to be painted along the floodwall in 2001.
As the oldest chartered community theater in Mississippi, the Vicksburg Theatre Guild has offered live theater for over 70 years. Home of the longest running show, as recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records: Gold in the Hills. Since 1956, the W. M. Whittington Little Theater, (also known as the Greenwood Little Theatre) has entertained and enriched the community and surrounding areas by providing a venue for those with an interest in theater and providing an outlet for their creative talents and spirit.
A life-size bronze sculpture of the legendary NFL player overlooks the Walter Payton Football Field in Gardner Stadium on the Columbia High School campus. Payton played high school football in Columbia and in 2002 the City dedicated the sculpture, entitled "Sweetness," in his memory.Columbia artist Ben Watts created the sculpture in consultation with the Payton family.
