Originally called Mount Salus, meaning "mountain of
health," Clinton was known for its many refreshing healthful springs.
To this day, a sense of well-being still fills the air.
Located in the middle of the largest urban area in the state, Clinton
is no
w one of the fastest growing cities in Mississippi.
The capital city of Jackson and all the amenities of a metropolitan
area are only 10 miles to the east - including museums, cultural events
and excellent medical facilities.
And to the west, the port city of Vicksburg is only minutes away where
countless historic attractions and casinos line the banks of the beautiful
Mississippi River.
The Natchez Trace Parkway meanders by Clinton, nature trails and scenic
overlooks marking its 8,000-year-old path. The walking paths and picnic
areas at Traceway Park echo with the cheers of baseball, football and
soccer games.
The oldest four-year college in the state, Mississippi College teaches
much more than history with its excellent academic programs. Provine
Chapel survived Sherman 's torches during the Civil War, and now the
historic chapel brightens the Mississippi College campus every spring
with dazzling azaleas.
Discounts on continuing education and special seminars dealing with
retirement topics are available at Mississippi College. The school also
hosts many athletic and cultural events.

In nearby Raymond, the Hinds Community College curriculum offers "Creative
Learning in Retirement." This innovative program was designed by retirees
to cater to their educational interests and keep the cost of continuing
education down.
The Arts Council of Clinton gets spring in gear with Arts in April.
The Brick Streets Festival kicks off this month-long series of festivities
- a celebration of arts and crafts, food and music on the historic brick
streets of "Olde Towne" Clinton.
Art exhibits, musical performances, a Shakespeare festival and a Civil
War re-enactment depicting the Battle of Clinton fill out Arts in April
's festive schedule.
The Fourth of July is synonymous with good times in Clinton. The entire
community comes together for the live music, food and sky rockets at
the Annual Fireworks Extravaganza.
ClintonIf the sounds of bombs bursting in air prove to be a little much,
the annual Taste of the Arts in the fall and the Festival of Lights
soothe the ears of classical music lovers during the holiday season.
Read what people like you have to say about Clinton:
Having moved from Gary, Indiana, just three years ago where they had
lived for 34 years, Tommy and Juanita Walker now call Clinton their
home
Mississippi Living: What drew you to Mississippi?
The Walkers: Originally from Edwards, Mississippi, we always agreed
that we would eventually return to our home state. We chose Clinton
because it is what we call a progressive town, and it's not too big.
In addition, we have always found that towns that have colleges generally
have worthwhile activities and a lot to offer.
Mississippi Living: What particularly appeals to you in Clinton?
The Walkers: Since Clinton is the Home of Mississippi College, the oldest
four-year institution of higher learning in the state, it is apt to
be more progressive with good things under development. In addition,
it offers many opportunities to continue my writing career.
Mississippi Living: Do you feel like you're a part of the community?
The Walkers: Yes, there are many volunteer opportunities in which to
be involved - another key reason for selecting Clinton as the retirement
location. With activities ranging from serving as volunteers at the
Clinton Visitor Center to a strong commitment to local church work,
the opportunities to be connected with others and in the community are
many.
