Madison

Madison offers its residents a unique suburban hometown. The town is a planned community giving priority to safety, comfort and a small-town atmosphere. Being named "One of the Top 100 Cities in America" by CNN/Money Magazine, Madison also offers an international doorway to business, recreational and educational experiences through its sister city relationship with Solleftea, Sweden.

Just five miles north of Jackson, Madison's close proximity to the state's capital has made the town a thriving suburban community. The symphony, opera, ballet, theater companies and the Mississippi Museum of Art with its international exhibitions are well worth the 15-minute drive. The Jackson International Airport provides convenient access to the area.

MadisonWith more than 70 carefully planned subdivisions, Madison provides a serene environment for residents who desire all that a metropolitan area has to offer.

With four courses in the area, a favorite aspect of this serene environment is Annandale, a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, is located in Madison. The course gives residents the chance to be tested on some challenging holes and the PGA-sanctioned Viking Classic brings professionals each year. A recreational and fitness center keeps everybody limber between tee times.

Southern Living Magazine featured Madison's shopping area. Here's what they said: "...Instead of repetitive chain stores taking over, this community features a handful of boutiques, galleries and restaurants that are drawing a lot of attention - and visitors-up I-55." The Inside Story is spread over two floors in a small, Victorian house. This accessory and gift emporium carries everything from purses, necklaces, and shoes to Christmas ornaments, ceramic monkeys, candles, and decorative pillows. Persnickety is a unique home accessory, fine gift and bridal register shop. Along with many other accessory and gift shops you are going to want to spend the afternoon browsing Madison.

The arts have a home in Madison, as well. The Madison Square Center for the Arts is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to the Mississippi Metropolitan Ballet. Residents with a creative side can also take classes in dance, theater, art and music here.

Strawberry Patch Park is the site for many good times for the Madison community. The park combines walking trails with exercise stations, playground equipment and picnic areas, all surrounding a serene lake for fishing. The Simmons Arboretum features a wonderful walking tour through a variety of Mississippi's native plants, trees, and shrubs.

The Natchez Trace is a perfect place to unwind. Its historic sites and nature trails are perfect for picnics or an afternoon walk. Boating, sailing, swimming, fishing and hunting make the 33,000-acre Ross Barnett Reservoir the place to go if you're looking for some intense relaxation.

Mississippi Living: What lured you to Mississippi?

The Robersons: We came to Madison every year to visit grandchildren and great- grandchildren that live here. The architecture of the buildings, the quality of life and services that are found in Madison appealed to us immensely. We saw Madison explode like a bag of Microwave popcorn!

Mississippi Living: How do you keep yourselves busy?

The Robersons: By joining Madison the City Chamber of Commerce, volunteering and participating in activities like bingo, day trips, ribbon cuttings, lunches, and through our church we have met many wonderful people and stay busy.

Mississippi Living: What's the best thing about living in Madison?

The Robersons: It is a nice blend of a small community with large city amenities. We love staying involved, golfing, and we are close to our family.
