NATIONAL SEAL OF APPROVAL GIVEN TO MISSISSIPPI’S CERTIFIED RETIREMENT CITIES

JACKSON, Miss., - The American Association of Retirement Communities announces it has honored the 21 Certified Retirement Cities in Mississippi with their Seal of Approval. This designation identifies municipalities and master planned communities that provide the quality of life that today’s retirees seek. The program is patterned after the certification requirements of the  Hometown Mississippi Retirement Program administered by the Mississippi Development Authority.

“This administration recognizes the importance of the hospitality industry and believes strongly that it is one of the major growth areas for our state,” said Leland Speed, executive director, Mississippi Development Authority (MDA).  “It is truly an honor to be recognized by such a prestigious national organization. It is especially gratifying to know their program was patterned after ours.”

Qualified municipalities must have the official support from the city governing authority as well as a sponsoring organization within the community such as a Chamber of Commerce. Approved municipalities must have adequate and convenient medical services and must have local adult education programs. The municipality must also have recreational opportunities such as walking trails or fitness centers, and cultural opportunities such as theaters or art galleries. The municipality must have a low crime rate – comparable to or below the national average – and must demonstrate civic pride in its appearance, environments quality, and economic quality and vitality.

“As a Mississippian, you should be proud of what makes our state unique. I commend the many individuals involved with securing the Seal of Approval. A strong vibrant community results in successful economic development, and healthy growth in business and industry,” said Craig Ray, director, Tourism Development, MDA.
