Desoto CountyIn the mid 1960’s, lawmakers decided the state should build Welcome Centers as part of the Lady Byrd Johnson Nationwide Highway Beautification Act. The DeSoto County Welcome Center was fourth of twelve Welcome Centers built in the state. It was opened September 20, 1976.

Mississippi Welcome Centers are designed to reflect the Antebellum South.
Each is of authentic Colonial design with a veranda surrounding the building lined with columns.

Desoto CountyThe Architectural Firm for the Center, Godfrey, Bassett, Pitts and Tuminello LTD of Jackson MS. Architectural details such as moldings, trim and brickwork as near to the antebellum period as possible.

At each entrance of the building lighting is provided by a brass chandelier.
A skylight is located in the center of the lobby and in bathroom hallway of the Welcome Center and a fireplace with a seal of the state above which enhances the wall.

Desoto CountyThe Center received minor renovation in 1984. In 1999-2000 the Center underwent extensive renovation. New restrooms, walking paths and landscaping were added.

Welcome Centers in Mississippi are staffed and operated by Mississippi Development Authority. They are built and maintained by Mississippi Department of Transportation.
