Hancock
County Welcome Center is the culmination of a joint effort of the
Mississippi Department of Transportation and The Mississippi Development
Authority. Construction began on the Welcome Center in September 1978
by Roy Anderson Construction Company of Gulfport and was completed
at a cost of 1.23 million dollars. The total cost of the center was
funded with 90 percent federal and 10 percent state funds. It is the
fifth and largest of the twelve centers along Mississippi's interstate
system.
The
Hancock County Welcome Center encompasses 7,000 square feet on 60
acres of land at the intersection of 1-10 and Mississippi 607 along
the Gulf Coast. It includes picnic grounds and rest area facilities
and has the unique feature of a armillary sphere.
