Itawamba County

Itawamba CountyThe idea for Mississippi State Welcome Centers began as part of the Highway Beautification Act of 1965.  The Itawamba County Welcome Center is located in the northeastern part of the state, known as the Hills regions. Perched on a hillside that is a tiny piece of the western tip of the Appalachians overlooking Highway 78.
Itawamba County was the tenth to open in the state, celebrating the Grand Opening on August 13, 1992.

The Williamsburg design of the building reflects the antebellum history of the state.  The design depicted the antebellum south complete with a surrounding veranda, brass chandeliers and a fireplace with the Mississippi State Seal displayed above it.

Itawamba CountyThe Mississippi Development Authority Tourism Division is responsible for staffing the welcome center.  Each staff member is extensively trained and certified in public relations and Mississippi facts and history.  Twenty-four hour security and maintenance on the building and grounds are provided by the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
