Jackson CountyThe first Welcome Center for Jackson County was in a travel trailer in the Sears Town Shopping Center on Hwy. 90 in Pascagoula opened in 1976. In 1978 it was moved to a trailer on Hwy. 90 near the truck scales in what is known as the Orange Grove area of Jackson County. While I-10 was being built the land where the present Welcome Center is now was nothing but pine trees and swampland. Fire broke out and burned all of the pine trees so when the present Welcome Center was built in 1983, the state had to plant all new trees. The present Welcome Center opened on June 1, 1984. The building is built out of St. Joe brick and is located on about 60 acres.
